A Bit About Our Class
Welcome to the 2018-19 school year. My name is Matthew Zimmer, and I will be your child's teacher this year. I have been a teacher in Bethalto for nineteen years, and I am looking forward to working with your child. My wife and I have been married for fifteen years, and we have one child, our twelve-year-old son, Evan, who will be in seventh grade this year. Rest assured that I understand the anxiety all parents must feel on the first day of school, but I know that he is in safe hands, though, and I promise - so is your child.
The classroom rules are fairly standard, and are reflective of the goals that the school has set forth in our implementation of the PBIS (Positive Behavior, Intervention, and Support) program. A weekly behavior sheet will be sent home on Friday.
- Everyone should be respectful to others.
- Always be kind.
- Give your best effort.
- Listen more than you speak.
- Endeavor to be responsible for yourself.
- Students should keep things clean and tidy.
- Students may individually earn tickets for demonstrating the various character words. These may be redeemed for various items.
- Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a reward day once per quarter.
- A school auction is held each semester.
I will contact parents regarding any issues within the classroom that necessitate a consequence beyond the loss of recess minutes, or in regard to any habitual issues. However, please do not anticipate that a phone call from me will be in regard to a disciplinary issue. I also call regarding positive things as well!
Please note that some behaviors may necessitate additional or immediate action by either the principal or myself.
Any detention slips will be sent home for your signature. Please return them as soon as possible. Homework is expected to be completed by the next school day unless otherwise denoted. These may not be used on extended assignments, quizzes, tests, or projects.
Should events prevent the completion of assigned work, please feel to contact me via e-mail or by phone. I am certain that we can come to an arrangement. I will be sending a daily notice using the Remind app to those parents who have elected to subscribe. It is a free service, and very helpful according to many parents from last year!
Each child has selected one of their folders as their take-home folder. Please check these regularly, as they will contain home-school communications as well as homework assignments.
Students are seldom allowed to turn in work the day on which it is assigned, although they will have time to complete it in class. Therefore, all assignments written in their assignment book should be in their take-home folders, email, or accessible from their Google Drive or Edmodo accounts for your perusal.
Picking Up Your Child Early
Parents, if you are picking up your child during regular school hours, you will now be required to present a driver's license or other form of picture identification before you will be allowed to sign your child out.
